“What Came First” in the Globe

I got to sub for the wonderful Jan Freeman and camp out in her usual space at the Boston Globe today — here's the column I wrote about antedating. (Registration may be required, or you can try BugMeNot.com for a password if you prefer not to register.)
Thanks again to Grant Barrett and Ben Zimmer for all their help and great examples …
(Don't worry, it doesn't have anything to do with the Geico Cavemen.)

  1. Hi. I enjoyed your article in the Globe, since I’m one of those oddballs who really enjoys word origins. So much so, in fact, that I have a site called FirstMention that is devoted to the history of words and phrases. You might enjoy having a look:FirstMention.comMy latest entry is on Pizza, which dates back to about 1903, and used to be known as ‘bologna pie’!I’m always on the lookout for the next entry at FirstMention, so if you (or anyone) has some suggestions, please drop me a line to let me know.Cheers,David
